AA1NZ won FIRST PLACE in an antenna shoot-out with our SHUNT-100 installed.

Tom, AA1NZ, won first place in an annual antenna shoot-out. The photos below are a close-up of the base of his antenna (Hi A 5/160) showing our SHUNT-100, his vehicle with antenna and the new Hi Q Antennas "egg beater" capacity hat. The last photo is of the receiving antenna that is used in the antenna shoot-out, and was designed by Tom. Congratulations Tom! Note how his large motorized HF antenna is mounted on the ROOF of his cross over! Great setup.

WB1DBY's new Honda Ridgeline multiple antenna bracket, June 27, 2008

Photo below is from Larry's BKT-HondaRL-1 mount for his three antennas. I took the photo after we completed the installation and took measurements for my blue prints - this new product is now ready for shipment to other customers, click > BKT-HondaRL-1 - can I ship one for your Ridgeline? His mount is our standard "matte black" powder coated paint. This looks great with the Honda style and looks factory installed.

W4VPI's review of his SHUNT-100 Adjustable HF Load Inductor, June 15, 2008

Shunt-100 unit review. Problem: my HI-Q 3" shorty had 1.5 : 1 SWR on 80m, 20m not tunable at all, other bands were good. I installed the shunt-100 per the supplied instruction sheet, and now SWR is at or near zero on all bands. It took about an hour of experimenting with the shunt-100 coil to get it right. (Use caution when tightening the shunt-100 fasteners.) tip: when doing the setup for the shunt-100, do so in an open parking lot or field away from trees, fences, or light posts. I run an Icom 7000 with an Ameriton ALS 500 amp. Turbo turner tunes all bands to zero SWR with this setup. Ill be ordering a second shunt-100 for my other mobile. Highly recommend. w4vpi

 eHam.net Review - Mentions UHAM Mount,  May 4, 2008

A eHam.net review of the Hi-Q 5/160 motorized HF antennas mentions the UHAM mount, which the owner has used to mount the heavy Hi-Q antenna (http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/6993 ):

Big Mobile signal

Time owned: 3 to 6 months

Installed this antenna on the back of the Park Avenue using the much maligned hitch mount. I did make some mods to the hitch to insure a solid mount. I used a Uham 100 mount to brace it as I don't weld aluminium. I took K0BG's advice and used RF beads on the feedline and the motor control line at both ends. As a result I an use the IC-7000 with the Better RF autotune set up with no problems. The results using the large cap hat and 7 foot whip are very good. I run a GS-4/160 on my Metro with a cap hat and 7 foot whip and parked in the driveway these antennas perform identically. That is a good thing as I am very satisfied with the GS-4. The Hi-Q is well made and performs as advertised. 160 meter mobile may be QRP but is worth the trouble!!

Gary, W7FSI, April 27, 2008

Gary sent an email about his UHAM150 and SHUNT100 after a 1,200 mile trip, and submitted photos of his Hi Q antenna on the front of his F-250. Nice installation of front mounted HF antenna!

Hello Dick,
Thought I'd send you a couple photos of the HiQ-4/80 with the UHAM 150 and SHUNT-100.
The Truck is an 2000 FORD F-250 SD 4x4.....
Just completed 1200 mile trip and really enjoyed the combination with my IC-7000 and the Turbo Tuner.
Still trying to tighten up the 75 meter and 40 meter VSWR but 1.1 on 75 and 1.5 to 1 on 40 is nothing to complain about really!!!

Excellent signal reports even with propagation not being too good.

Happy Trails.

Carl, N0KUQ, April 21, 2008
Carl recently installed a UHAM-150 and SHUNT-100 for his Hi Q antenna on his Dodge 4X4. The photos below were sent by Carl. Note that his UHAM is pointing "to the side" - can be used point backward as well. Thanks Carl for the photos.

 Udo, AD5RQ, February 18, 2008

Comment today from a recent UHAM-150 mount customer, copied below is his reply to a question on the Hi Q Antennas Yahoo group:
Steve,
I have the 5/80RT and the supplied antennamount seemed to me not enough.
I bought an antennamount from WWW.rep-design.com [correction:www.repdesign.us]
Got it last week and it is from first class quality.

When your trying to mount an HF antenna on a vehicle, one of many
problems you run into is finding quality hardware that actually can
withstand the rigors of mobile radio service in the "real world" of
low hanging branches. We have listed some vendors who design their
equipment to meet those requirements and this is one of them.

Les, N4EZK

In October 2007 Les purchase our "INSUL KIT 01", same type of insulation as used in our UHAM-100 and UHAM-150 mounts, to use with his modifed Tarheel mount - see photo below.  The thin insulation sleeve on the Tarheel mount was wearing out periodically and he was looking for something that would stand up better to wear, and be able to withstand the high power he was running with his Icom 7000 and SG-500 amplifier (500+ watts). He has been using the modified Tarheel mount with his Hi Q Antennas 5/160 antenna.

For his emailed results: click > TEST RESULTS .

Les has just purchased a UHAM-150 mount and SHD-SO239 connector - the first production units made - to replace his Tarheel mount.

Jerry, NX0I, Fall 2007

In August (2007) he installed a UHAM-100 heavy duty antenna mount and SAM-100 second antenna bracket that bolts to the UHAM-100. His antenna is a Hi Q Antennas 5/160 motorized HF antenna. These are mounted to a custom side bracket that is mounted to a trailer hitch on his Silverado, and extends out the back left corner of his pickup truck. Notice his connector for the antenna motor cable - very nice!  His email (2007-09-04) and photos are below.

Jerry sent another batch of photos (2007-09-15) showing how he has connected his Icom IC-7000, key and talking watt meter - very nice looking and neat installation. The photo showing his control head and switches includes the LED "limit of travel" circuit that is a free download on our "Downloads" page [LED INDICATOR]. The two photos of his radio and control head show a good example of how to install ferrite bead filters. The antenna and mount close-up photos show how he has connected the ground, coax and motor cable.

Below are emails from Jerry about his UHAM-100 mount that he has used for about 4 months (as of 12/2007) and other comments on our new products.

Subject: New Products on your web site.

Dick,

I just visited your web site and noticed 3 new products I am interested in.
1st is the SHD-239 coax connecter.  Will it fit my UHAM-100?  If so, how much are you asking?

2nd is the Shunt-100.  Is it available yet? And what is the price?  And will it fit my UHAM-100?

3rd is the CNCT-PL259 WXQD.  Is it available yet? And how much?

These look real good on your mount.  This would also solve some weather problems I am having with my shunt coil being exposed to the elements.
    Thanks,  Jerry NX0I
(2) Email from Jerry 12/28/2007 with responses to a customer questionnaire that was sent to UHAM-100 owners (my questions are black, his unedited response is blue):

Dear Owners of the UHAM-100 Mount,

I have sent this customer survey to learn about your experience with your UHAM-100 universal heavy duty mount for motorized and screwdriver HF antennas. I also want to wish you Happy Holidays and happy DX!

As with any product, especially new ones like the unique UHAM-100, it is very important to understand customer’s experiences, good and bad, in order to provide the best possible products!

If you do not mind, please answer the following questions about your experience so far.

  1. Have you used your UHAM-100 yet and if so how long or for roughly how many miles has it been on your vehicle? Yes, I have it installed and in use.  I would say probably a couple thousand miles so far.

2.     Does the UHAM-100 fully meet your expectations? Yes, I am very pleased with the quality and the ease of installation and removal.

3.      Please explain how it meets or does not meet your expectations. I like the way it supports the HI-Q 160 mast to give it more stability, and also the fact that I can attach another antenna to the bracket if I so desire.

4.      What is the highest power you have transmitted into an antenna mounted to the UHAM-100? The Highest power I have transmitted into the antenna is 100 watts from my Icom 7000.

5.      Have you used another brand of mount for your HF antenna and if so what brands and how does the UHAM-100 compare?  The UHAM-100 is the only mount I have used.  I did a lot of  looking for something that would support my antenna, and the UHAM-100 was exactly what I was looking for.  It met all my requirements.

6.      How easy was it to install the insulation kit on your antenna and how has the insulation worked so far? The insulation kit was very easy to install, and so far I haven't noticed any problem or deterioration of the material.

7.      How easy was it to install your antenna on the UHAM-100 and to mount the UHAM-100 to your vehicle? I had no problems installing the UHAM-100 to my vehicle.  I attached it to another bracket which I homebrewed.  The antenna is very easy to install to the mount and remove.  Just takes seconds.

8.      Are there any improvements or changes that you would like to see on the UHAM-100?  The only thing I would like to see is the option to buy more of the plastic SO239 covers when I don't have anything connected to them.  I am using a T to attach the coax to the  base of the UHAM-100 and the other part of the T is what I am attaching the Shunt coil to.  Because of snow and ice and salt spray, I have been removing the shunt coil and that leaves the T exposed.

9.      Are there other mobile radio or antenna accessories that you would like to see us make? Yes, as I mentioned above, the option to buy more SO239 coax covers, also I would like to come up with a way to have a Shunt Coil I could tap for the different bands to help resonance, and have the ability to switch from tap to tap.  Also some way to conceal from the weather.  I am trying to come up with a solution.

10.     Do you have comments on our web site – ease of use, ease of finding information, etc.? I check your web site quite often.  I think it is very easy to use.  I hope you are having some success with your effort.

11.     Are there any other comments that you would like to provide? The only thing I might add, is if you want, I will give you an update on how the anodized aluminum bracket and all fittings held up through our winter here.  They use a lot of salt on the streets and I try to keep my bracket washed off so it doesn't eat into the paint.  I'll let you know come April how it did.

12.     May I include your comments on our web site under your call letters? Yes, by all means.  Go ahead.

13.     Do you have any photos of your installation that you would like to send me and if so can I post on our web site?  I have sent some, but I will send you some more of how I attached the Shunt coil, and how the CWS Multi Unun is connected to the radio, and how the BetterRF is attached.

(1) Emails from Jerry 9/4/2007 & 9/15/2007 about his new UHAM-100 installation with photos of his installation:
Dick,

Here are some pictures I just took of my UHam installation on my truck.  Your mounting bracket is exactly what I was looking for.
As you can see, I installed a bracket on my stainless steel bracket like they use for plugging in trailer brakes & lights.
I haven't got everything completely wired yet in the truck cab.  I am on vacation and trying to do a little bit everyday but it has been so hot, heat indexes near 100degs, that I work a little then rest a little.
I keep hoping that BetterRF will get the 2nd piece of their controller ready for sale so I can make it automatic.  I know a lot of guys brag about how good the Turbo Tuner is.
I have the TW1 talking wattmeter I am going to use also.
Anyway  here are some pictures I took.  I will probably have to send them too you a few at a time.  It sent back the last email I sent you.  It said I exceeded the size of file you would accept.
Also I was wondering if the size of resisters in the schematic you sent me for the upper and lower contacter limits were what you used, or did you have to change the values?
I have a shunt coil ready to attach to the brackets, but don't want to install it until after I get the antenna close to resonance on all bands.
I have also thought about a UNUN that I could switch in or out different impedance's.
